[Jesus says,] "Suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. ...And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me....'"~ Luke 15:8-9 (NIV)

The old saying goes, Find a penny, pick it up...all the day you have good luck! But kids today will say, "but only if it's heads up!" My daughter likes to say cynically, "Mom -- find a penny, pick it up...all the day -- you have a penny." Both of these responses seem to say, it's only a penny, why bother? And it's true...it's only one cent. But I always say, if you find a hundred of these, you have a dollar! That gives pause to some. :-)
The point is, a penny really is pretty insignificant. We throw them away in wishing wells and give them away because they bother us....just too much bulk in our pockets or wallets. Insignificant in the grand scheme of hundreds and thousands of dollars we make and spend in a given day, month or year. So what does it matter if you drop one down a grate in the sidewalk? Not even a consideration to go after it. There's more where that came from, right? I mean, it's only a penny...
Some might think that God looks at them as just a penny. Nothing special, nothing worth going after, nothing worth saving. Throwaway. Disposable. Insignificant. But let me tell you something. On God's sidewalk, every penny is significant. Heads up, or heads down -- it doesn't matter. Every single coin He's created is of ultimate value to Him! So valuable, in fact, that He sent His Son Jesus, who's sacrifice and resurrection we joyously celebrate this weekend, to pay our penalty for sin, to pave the way as the firstborn of the resurrection of the dead! FOR YOU -- a mere penny. FOR ME -- a mere penny. But to God, we are like gold next to His heart.
Revel in the love God has for you. Cherish the sweet sacrifice Jesus gave out of His love for you. He longs to hold you, His treasure, close to His heart. Give yourself as an offering to the Master Coin Collector. You are priceless in His eyes and worth dying for to have for Himself!
Love,
Joelene
